I feel like I’ve been saying this for years, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true: the world is HEAVY these days.
There are a lot of systemic issues that impact all of us and that doesn’t even include the personal stressors we all manage. I completely understand whenever I hear people sharing that they’re not quite sure what the “point” is anymore.
While this list won’t solve all of the aforementioned problems, adding more joy into your day can help the other things seem more manageable. It’s easier to get through the rough patches if you have something to look forward to, or if you’re coming off a mini high.
You’ve probably heard of all of these suggestions (or maybe not!), but that doesn’t mean it’s not helpful to have a reminder to incorporate some of these into your routine.
1. Get a little treat to start the day
This is absolutely a privilege that not all of us can afford, but if you can, treat yourself. Sure, those $6 lattes add up. But if they make it easier for you to get through the day, maybe $6 is a small price to pay. Starting your day (and whatever comes with it) with something that makes you smile sets you up to start at a positive versus at a deficit.
2. Connect with a loved one
We’ve all been told that connection with others is important, but we often think about it as making social plans or taking a large chunk out of our day in order to see a friend or family member. Sure, that’s the ideal, but even a quick text does make a difference in how we feel. Sending memes back and forth on Instagram might feel trivial, but it absolutely can help boost your mood. Now that’s a GOOD reason to scroll social media!
3. Carve out time for freedom
Another one that is full of privilege, but if you’re able to, take time that is for you to do anything you feel like doing in that moment. A day, an hour, even five minutes. Planned fun is great, but it still comes with the extra pressure of a schedule. Blocking off time in your day to have “free time” can make all the difference in how you feel when you move on to the rest of your to do list.
4. Learn something new
This doesn’t need to mean taking on an entirely new skill or hobby (but if you can, amazing!). Read an article about a topic you weren’t familiar with. Google something you wonder in your head on your way to work. We humans are naturally curious about the world around us and exercising our brain is also a mood booster.
5. Appreciate the little things
It’s so easy for us to forget that, despite the mess, there’s a lot of beauty in the world. Offset some of the constant “doom and gloom” by remembering that flowers are pretty, puppies exist, and the sun feels really nice. Or, whatever makes you personally smile!
